Assisted Book Publishing vs Doing It Alone
Compare assisted book publishing with a solo release so you can decide what to hire out and what to keep.
Doing it alone is reasonable when you already know editing, cover design, and ebook stores. Assisted publishing is reasonable when you want those jobs done in one sequence while you keep the rights.
What you still own either way
Copyright starts with the author. A publishing service should not take your royalty account or your pen name unless you sign something that says so. Read that clause before you pay.
What usually goes wrong alone
The common failures are a cover that signals the wrong genre, an interior with inconsistent spacing, and a blurb that describes the theme instead of the reader promise. None of those require a famous imprint. They require a second professional set of eyes and files that meet store specs.
What to hire first
If the draft is still finding its shape, hire developmental editing before design. If the prose is finished, hire copyediting, then cover and formatting. Marketing is more effective after the retail page is honest, because ads cannot repair a confusing blurb.
